1. Day #1: We arrive in Hot Springs NC zip code 28743. We will stay at
the Hot Springs Campground (828)622-7267 or a local hostel. We can have dinner
at a local restaurant or pub. This is a small town and there is no fast food
drive thru, also during the week and on Sunday everything closes up at dark. We
conduct a last backpack check, showers/hygiene and then bedtime.
2. Day #2: Morning showers/hygiene, then we can eat breakfast at a
local diner, the campground or hostel. After breakfast we grab our gear and
meet with our shuttle service. Bluff Mountain Outfitters (828)622-7162 will
supply our shuttle van to the starting point of our adventure at Sam’s Gap Hwy.
#23. 40 miles north.
We start our hike at an elevation
just below 4000 feet and steadily go up and down to Hogback Ridge Shelter, Big
Flat, Lick Rock and then our Primitive Tent Camping spot at Sugar Loaf Gap and
Sugar Loaf Branch Creek 4250 feet in elevation. We set up camp, collect
firewood, collect water and eat dinner. We do personal hygiene and then sit
around the campfire and tell stories. Note: because of terrain and conditions
there are only so many places to set up camp. 10.4 miles of hiking for the day.
3. Day #3: Breakfast, hygiene, roll up gear and hike toward Devils Fork
Gap 3500 feet, Flint Mountain Shelter 4400 feet, Snake Den Ridge 4800 feet,
Gravel Knob and then Big Butt 4838 feet. After taking a long afternoon break we
will then finish our days hike to Jerry Cabin Shelter and primitive tent
camping 4400 feet. We set up camp, collect firewood, collect water and eat
dinner. We do personal hygiene and then sit around the campfire and tell stories.
Note: because of terrain and conditions there are only so many places to set up
camp. 6.7 miles of hiking for the
day.
4. Day #4: (Most Beautiful Day) Breakfast, hygiene, roll up gear and
hike toward and over Bald Mountain 4560 feet, Big Fire Scald Knob 4360 feet,
Little Fire Scald Knob 4520 feet, Bear Wallow Gap, White Stack Cliff, Bear
Stack Cliffs, Camp Creek Bald Fire Tower 4844 feet and then our camping spot
Little Laurel Shelter and primitive tent camping 3500 feet.
This day by far is the best day for
scenery and rocky ridge walking, mountain top narrow rock walking and cliffs. We
set up camp, collect firewood, collect water and eat dinner. We do personal
hygiene and then sit around the campfire and tell stories. Note: because of
terrain and conditions there are only so many places to set up camp. 6.8 miles of hiking for the day.
5. Day #5: Breakfast, hygiene, roll up gear and hike toward Allen Gap
from 3500 feet to 2234 feet and then to Deep Gap, Spring Mountain Shelter 3000
